Four species of plasmodium can infect and be transmitted among humans. Severe disease is largely caused by Plasmodium falciparum, while disease caused by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malarias is generally much milder. The disease is a major health problem in much of the tropics and subtropics.
